Seatown and Earlier Poems

by Conor O'Callaghan Seatown and Earlier Poems

"Seatown is deft, intelligent, a masterpiece of moody atmospherics. O'Callaghan has painstakingly assembled a faultless body of poems that haunt and persist." Sinéad Morrissey, PN Review

"O'Callaghan's poetry is marvellously his own. … [Its] bewitching obliquity … obviates neat conclusions. What is evident from Seatown and its predecessor is that Conor O'Callaghan is a gifted poet." Stephen Knight, The Literary Supplement

"His concern is contemporary Ireland — an Ireland poised, like a coastal town, at the defining edge of two worlds, one that must learn to contain both its past ... and its present.... Conor O'Callaghan will 'make tracks' on this side of the ocean as well as in his native land." Judith Kitchen, Georgia Review

The Swimming Pool

This is the inland silence that allows
no sounds to enter. It is also dawn.

The rockery is black with the sun behind.
Outside, the world has yet to start.

The step I take from the edge into the shallows
makes no ripples on the white day that follows.
