A Slow Dance

$25.00

A Slow Dance contains meditations on death, like “Courtyard in Winter” and “A Graveyard in Queens,” as well as grotesque sequences like “The Cave of Night” and “O Riada’s Farewell” which commemorates the poet’s composer friend who died in 1971. But these are balanced by the elemental energies displayed in “Dowager,” “Hero’s Portion,” and “Colonel, Retreating.”

Notes: This is a first edition, and was the first volume published by Wake Forest University Press. A Slow Dance was a joint publication with The Dolmen Press and Oxford University Press.

Reviews

“. . . both a deep immersion in the poet’s search to identify himself with his land and people and an effort to liberate himself at the same time.”
– M. L. Rosenthal, New York Times Book Review

A Slow Dance is beautiful, poems unafraid of poetry.”
– Donald Hall, Parnassus: Poetry in Review

“While each poem and sequence in A Slow Dance is complete in itself, each gathers momentum when considered as part of a unified whole. Reinforcing or balancing each other, their cumulative effect enables us to share Montague’s celebration of life, to take part in the slow dance, danced in the loneliness of individuality, yet pulsating courageously with the rhythms of the earth.”
– Honor O’Connor, Eire-Ireland
