Wake: Up to Poetry
Pop Art Poetry
Our new cover for The Essential Brendan Kennelly: Selected Poems has been chosen, and it is not at all what I was expecting. Poetry reminds me of rainy days, brick fireplaces, and quilted afghans. Ireland inspires open pastures, lush fields, and quiet landscapes. Therefore, when the two collide I expect rainy fields, quiet fires, and lush afghans.
Brendan Kennelly’s cover is none of these things.
There is no nature involved, and certainly no rain. It is not at all the quiet cover I was expecting; on the contrary, it is fabulously loud. It takes me back to the days when I would judge books solely based on their covers. Anything bright, bold, and beautiful would come home with me, regardless of the story within.
The best part about this cover is that it perfectly represents its contents. Kennelly’s poems are not comforting, peaceful bedtime poems. They are alight with energy and action; they are as bold as the cover, and even more impressive. Just wait till you see.
